Basic Information
The Nautilus is a neutral mob that naturally spawns in all ocean biomes in Minecraft, with higher spawn rates in colder oceans.
It has a base health of 15 (7.5 hearts) and is immune to poison, likely due to feeding on pufferfish. While it is not hostile by default, the Nautilus is a neutral mob and will retaliate if attacked first.
Its attack damage is relatively low:
- 2.5 on Easy
- 3 on Normal
- 4.5 on Hard
When killed, it has a 5% chance to drop a Nautilus Shell.

How to Tame
The Nautilus can be lured using pufferfish and has a 33% chance to be tamed.
Once tamed, you can place a standard saddle on the Nautilus to ride it, or equip it with special armor to increase its defense. After taming, its health can be restored by feeding it pufferfish or other types of fish.

Breeding
Unlike taming, Nautilus breeding can be done using any fish.
Baby Nautiluses are quite adorable and take 20 real-time minutes to grow into adults. Each time a fish is fed, the remaining growth time is reduced by 10%. Feeding a total of 72 fish will instantly mature the baby Nautilus into an adult.

Abilities
While riding the Nautilus, you can hold the spacebar to charge a gauge, similar to riding a horse. Releasing the key allows the Nautilus to perform a fast forward dash. The dash has a cooldown of about 2 seconds, and when chaining dashes while moving, the Nautilus can travel even faster than a boat.
Additionally, while mounted, a buff called “Nautilus’s Breath” appears in the top-right corner of the screen. This buff prevents the oxygen meter from decreasing underwater, allowing the rider to breathe indefinitely while submerged.

Nautilus Armor
There are five types of Nautilus armor: Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. Nautilus armor cannot be crafted. Instead, it can be obtained from shipwrecks, ocean ruins, and buried treasure chests. Netherite Nautilus armor must be upgraded using a smithing template, just like other Netherite equipment. Similar to horse armor, Nautilus armor has infinite durability and cannot be enchanted.
To equip the armor, right-click the Nautilus while holding the armor item, or place it in the armor slot through the Nautilus’s inventory while mounted. To remove the armor, take it out of the inventory or use shears to unequip it. As a side note, smelting Copper, Iron, or Gold Nautilus armor yields metal nuggets.

Zombie Nautilus
The Zombie Nautilus naturally spawns in the ocean at night. Despite its zombie-like appearance, it does not attack first. Interestingly, it can be tamed just like a normal Nautilus. However, in rare cases, it may spawn with a Drowned riding it, in which case it will be hostile, so caution is advised.
Additionally, since the Zombie Nautilus is classified as a zombie mob, it burns when exposed to sunlight. However, equipping it with armor grants immunity to sunlight damage, allowing it to survive during the day.

When a Zombie Nautilus spawns in warm ocean biomes, there is a low chance that it will appear with coral growing on its body. However, the coral will be covered and no longer visible if the Zombie Nautilus is equipped with armor.
